Spoiler Review: Zidane

Time for a card review! And this one is quite a doozy to start with! Thanks to RB, we have the latest water Legend spoiler from Opus 8!

This new 2 cost, 3000 power Zidane doesn't sound very special at first glance until you read his ability.

If you have six or more cards in hand Zidane cannot be blocked. When Zidane deals damage to your opponent, draw two cards. Solution 9 [S](wa)(wa): Choose one forward. Until the end of the turn, it loses 2000 power for each card in your hand.

Wow.

It's a bit of a double-edged sword but I'm sure I'm not the only person who see the value in exploiting his draw ability. Especially if you can find a way to use this on Turn 1. The first card that has come to many people's minds was the 2 cost fire backup, Sage.

When Sage enters the field, choose one forward you control. It gains haste until the end of the turn.

Combining these two together on your first turn would give you both a forward and back up ahead of your opponent, and if successful with your attack, end with 4 cards in hand. This can also be accomplished with 2cp Belias or 1cp Goblin, however instead of a backup first turn, you would draw a card instead. There could be an argument for either depending on your hand.

Of course this scenario is as long as your opponent doesn't have anything to say about it. Being only 3000 power leaves Zidane susceptible to many easy removals or damage cards. The plus being you can write off the loss by knowing your opponent would have to respond by emptying their first turn hand to stop you from drawing.

The game has always had 2 cost hasters to sneak in that very first point of damage, but after turn 2, they tend to just be useless on the field as sturdier forwards block their path. So if you lose the dice roll and your opponents first move is a 4000 power forward, we're not really gonna get far with Zidane.

The alternative could be to not prioritize him but make him an important part of your draw engine. With Lenna to return him from break zone, and plenty more drawing power, Zidane would easily see more use in a FF9 Mono Water Engine. With plenty of Category IX characters including searchers for it, it can be a very solid fit for him.

I would argue the risk to this would be drawing yourself out before you win the game, but with the amount of value you would end up with over your opponent, you could win well before your opponent can even set up.

So what do you think! Do you think he's a Mono Water card? Or a cheeky Water + _____ addition? Let us know!
